Learning Al Quran with Tilawati
Some methods to enable students to recite Qur’an appropriately have been offered and introduced. However, when it comes to one-by-one recitation, it is difficult for them (in class) to behave in an orderly manner for a long time. To address this issue, it is necessary to apply a method that makes them easy to learn and feel fun at the same time. As a consequence, students will not easily get bored.
One of the methods that fulfills these criteria is Tilawati with its balanced principle of whole-class and one-by-one recitations. Tilawati is a method to learn to read and recite Qur’an which is practical and designed to be attractive to primary students because it uses a simple melody called rost. Tilawati in Al
Azhar 55 Islamic Primary School is carried out three times a week or in six periods. Two meetings are spent for learning to recite and another session for extending students’ recitation, e.g. reciting selected sur
ahs/prayers. In every session, one year level is divided into groups based on students’ level of recitation.
After three years of implementation, Tilawati has attracted positive responses from parents. The highlight of this method lays in its distinctive melody that is easy to mimic so that students can practice at home independently. In addition to that, almost all of them practice reciting short surats at home with the melody. Thus, it becomes such a parents’ pleasure to hear their children recite the surats properly and appropriately.
