Hands-On Learning
Monday February 1st 2021A Powerful Learning Approach in Al Azhar 55 Yogyakarta
More and more schools in Indonesia are now embracing “Hands-on Learning” as part of their curriculum. But what is it, and why are they now using this teaching method?
Hands-on learning is an ideal method to acquire knowledge, skills and other competences such as teamwork and critical thinking that learner’s need in today’s competitive world.
When using a hands-on approach there is a substantial increase in the volume of information that students retain. Studies have shown that when students sit and listen intently but passively in a traditional classroom environment, they retain only around 20% of the information. When they are given the opportunity to practice and apply what they have learned, that percentage dramatically increases to over 70%.
When students are given the ability to learn in a practical hands-on environment, they are very often engaged, stimulated and want to learn as much as possible. Students’ appetite for learning increases and as a result they are more willing to listen and pay attention to. Students also become more empowered in their own learning situation and are more likely to follow up their learning outside the classroom.
Students’ critical thinking skills increase in a hands-on learning environment because they must make decisions on what to do next to receive the outcome they are striving to obtain. These critical thinking skills remain with them as opposed to knowledge that is simply memorized for a test and much of it is often forgotten after the exam. It is our hope that by using this approach we are creating a fun learning environment and at the same time better equipping our students with skills to face the challenges that await.
