Reading Log Program
Tuesday September 14th 2021Shaping Students’ Critical Thinking through Reading Log Program
Reading log is a journal where students record their reading. Students will note down the title of the books/texts they have read and answer the questions given using textual supports. In purely academic terms, it is known as a student-kept record of books read for a specific period, generally by date. It is a simple and the best method to note down a reader’s thoughts about a book, their connection with the text, language, plot, theme & characters he/she came to know.
Purposeful reading log in Al Azhar 55 Yogyakarta
The Library of Al Azhar 55 provides students with books of different genres. Every day, students are encouraged to borrow a book from the Library based on their reading level. Students will bring the book home and read it with their parents. They then have to retell their homeroom teacher(s) what the book is about. In the long run, we believe that it will develop students’ critical thinking skills.
Reading log serves multiple purposes to track students’ accountability in an independent reading program. It keeps track of their reading by giving the more memorable literary experience as we can vent out our thoughts about the book’s content. It is a way to show that they are being thoughtful about what they read.
Annually, we will award students’ achievement of reading based on the total number of books they have read. It is a small way to motivate students to make time for reading more books at home as a part of their independent learning process.
